General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)

Hi everyone-

This is Mircea, head of live content at tonebase!

Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.

Examples may include:

  • topics we should cover in future live streams
  • new live stream format ideas
  • people we should try to bring on as guests
  • anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!

If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!

We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

Happy posting!

  • I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm putting it here.

I want to share an idea I have for a possible future challenge. Maybe there could be a challenge that works us through a process of learning a new piece. Each participant could choose a piece of her/his own. Maybe there could also be a recommended list from an instructor, with pieces of many different levels. (In my opinion, it would work best with a relatively short piece that is a level or two under where the participant plays at, so the focus would be on the process, not overcoming technical hurdles.) Then a 4-5 week process could be taught, with each participant having assignments and posting progress along the way. By the end, we would each have a new piece in our repertoire that has been learned quite well, instead of the haphazard way I tend to learn pieces on my own. I know I would definitely enjoy doing something along those lines.

Thank you all so much for all you do. I have really loved the challenges I participated in and I have learned so much!

    Hi Mircea,

how about a live stream about Paganini? Guitar sonatas / caprices... I know Eliot Fisk recorded them and they are stunning readings ... maybe he would like to be involved??

    all best

Nick This is a great idea, Nick! I've personally played quite a few little gems by him - I'd love to do this soon! One of the reasons that he's such a great composer to feature, apart from his well-known love for the guitar, is that he wrote everything from extremely easy to highly challenging works that can be played on the guitar very successfully. Thank you so much for your suggestion!

    Hi Mircea.

    1) You've talked about the "cuban school" of guitar playing. A class on the various "schools" and how they differ would be interesting.

    2) Martin mentioned doing a Dyens 20 lettres stream. I like that idea.

Peter hi Peter! These are great suggestions, thank you!

On the topic of various schools of guitar playing - that is something that I've been meaning to do for a while. It's quite difficult to put into practice though, since it's such an abstract term to define and different musicians exhibit very different degrees of self-association with a specific "school".

I haven't yet been able to pin down a group of people to join me on a roundtable discussion of the various "schools", and I would not feel comfortable speaking on behalf of any performative or pedagogical method that I am not fully familiar with. I will keep on trying though, and if I succeed, I will announce it on all the usual channels!

When it comes to your other suggestion - I've personally never played that piece, but martin , would you be happy to do a live lesson on this work at some point? Could be a cool idea, either by itself or perhaps in the context of Dyens' larger oeuvre.

Barney let me think about that! For the last livestream I focused on the first and supposedly "easy" letters, maybe we I can do another one with the later ones, though I will do a livestream about Dyens' "Songe Capricorne" in the future!

Martin Thanks Martin!  I never studied these letters, but they address some very important techniques which would enhance the quality of our playing and sound.  did you study these with Joaquin or Marco?

    @Mircea

A live stream series idea:   Rhythm

The guitar foci could be Landslag VIII ( @Mehmet, @Martha Kreipke ), flamenco compás, and Bogdanović: Polyrhythmic and Polymetric Studies, but the content should be much broader. egs: Simha Arom on African polyphony, Reina on Karnatic Rhythmical Techniques. There are probably 99 similar things I should know about but do not.

This is indeed "a little niche for most standard guitar rep" as you said,  but hey, we all struggle with rhythm. Your LH/RH instruction shows how to think for yourself about fingering. Let's do that and exercise the rhythm muscle.

Peter hi Peter! This is great.

Rhythm is such an important and broad topic, the kind of which we can spend our entire lives learning about without ever getting even close to exhausting it.

We've had some streams on this topic in the past, but I would love to do some more!

As an ethnomusicologist, I've studied many works by Simha Arom, and in fact I'd love to bring him on board for a livestream. Unfortunately, I do not have any contact information I could use to get a hold of him, nor any knowledge about whether he is currently taking any speaking engagements.

When it comes to applying any of the principles described in his research to classical guitar performance, I am personally unaware of any works where that might be a pertinent approach, since I do not believe the guitar repertoire contains a lot of music from cultures he studied. The same goes for principles of Carnatic music.

I would love to do a livestream on Dusan's Polyrhythmic and Polymetric Studies, but given that I have never played them, I am certainly not the right person to do so. Perhaps we can get Dusan himself on board for a livestream, though! Now that would be great.

On a broader scale, it would be great to do an "Introduction to Polyrhythms" livestream - and in fact, it has already been requested in this thread. I believe it will be time to do this very soon. Thank you for requesting this!

Separately, as an ethnomusicologist, I am always happy to talk about music from various cultures around the world, and especially about unique and unusual approaches to rhythm.

I do think it is a little "off-topic", given our classical guitar focus here on tonebase - because as I said, I don't think much of it can be applied to the guitar repertoire. However, if there is enough demand for it, I would certainly be open to programming a couple of things.

On a much more basic level than your request, have have a look at these two rhythm-related livestreams we did in the past (if you haven't done so already):

Following the Tonebase hangout the other day, I thought it might be nice to have a teacher's meet-up, where we can ask for advice, share stories etc.. I don't seem to be getting to meet as many other teachers where I work as I would like, guitar or otherwise and a especially now, hearing what other people here do would be great.

Hi Mircea How about a livestream on planning a concert programme - not necessarily about specific pieces but identifying how the different characteristics fit together to produce an interesting and varied programme. Sounds like one for Steve Goss maybe.

    Hi Guys,

A few Live stream topic suggestions to consider:

Guitar Competitions - preparing for, format, judging, stories and experiences

State of the Guitar - industry and market, how to grow it, attract, excite, and retain students.

    What makes a good/poor student/teacher -

Old School Classical vs New School Modern Classical/Fingerstyle -

Life in the undergrad, grad program for guitar.  Outline the curriculum/courses schedule.

    Cheers!

Martin Dear community, maybe this is not the correct place - but wirer else can I write ?

    1. What about the idea to play a whole Baroque Suite as a challenge in combination with a livestream every week to explore the different "Sätze" of the Suite. For Example "Robert de Visee - Suite D Minor".... or a Bach-Suite 🥰
    • Week one "Prelude" and livestream - ok Prelude is nothing difficult.
    • Week two"Allemande" live-stream with every info about this dance form
    • Week three "Courante" live-stream about the courante etc..........

... five or six weeks to practice a new Suite and learn about all the "Tanzsätze", Takte, Verzierungen, Schwerpunkte use......that would be a great workshop !

       2. I miss a part in tonebase-software where everybody can chat with each other and share things in a "private" area. ( a place to share scores, ideas, Videos etc. )

    Thank you very much.

    Best Regards

    Olli

    • Olli great idea(s). I suggest to compare also the French style vs German style suites during the separate live sessions. For the French style I may suggest another (Czech) composer, Jan Antonin Logy (Comte de Losy). Less familiar, but beautiful music. Some quite easy some pretty difficult. Pavel Steidl edited and recorded 2 of his suites. Plays them often. Maybe Pavel would even be willing to give a Tonebase livestream or lesson?
To confine Bach to a tonebase challenge is in my eyes a bit of a sacrilege … How about Weiss?

I believe everyone really enjoyed the Tarrega Challenge because there is so much wonderful Spanish melodic music to choose from.

Another great composer that has a large body of beautiful works with many pieces at different difficulty levels is F. Moreno Torroba.  Please consider him for another composer challenge.  I think it would be great!

  • I would also vote for a Torroba challenge. There are not too many true beginner pieces by him, but a good amount of intermediate material.

I think two other good ones would be Mertz and Brouwer.
