General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)

Hi everyone-

This is Mircea, head of live content at tonebase!

Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.

Examples may include:

  • topics we should cover in future live streams
  • new live stream format ideas
  • people we should try to bring on as guests
  • anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!

If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!

We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

Happy posting!

Nails. Get pictures of our nails and recordings of our playing and show how one affects the other. Also, real deep dives into posture and positioning. I've had teachers tell me things like my shoulders are uneven, or that once an odd twitch in my arm was related to an over-long (or short? I forget) nail. Get a couple of us live on the call and work through those issues. My nail file stands ready.

Roddy Roddy, that would be an amazing idea. We've been working towards getting some of you involved in livestreams through video call for a while now, and I think we will soon be at a point where that is viable.

In addition to that, I would love to tackle the topics of posture and nail shape in various livestreams. That one will be sure to start some hot debates, as everyone has a different idea of what good posture is. Personally, I say bring the discussion on!

All in all, great ideas, and hope to make both of these happen very soon!

Emma I would love to make that happen, Emma! If we manage to get them on board, I will definitely announce it here in this forum! For now, we'll have to wait and see. 😉

  • How about a clinic on flamenco techniques for classical guitarists?

    • David Chidsey I second this suggestion! I think there would be a lot of interest in more flamenco content on Tonebase. From my own experience, I found that studying flamenco has had huge benefits on my classical playing.

Jaime Hi David Chidsey and Jaime! This is a great idea - I'd love to do some more flamenco livestreams soon.

Just so you know, we've had two in the past:

One with Silviu Ciulei (<- click to watch), back in June, where he showed us how to play our first full flamenco piece from the point of view of a classical player.

And one with Adam del Monte (<- click), in which he tackled a variety of flamenco topics and answered a lot of user questions, in December.

That being said, one can never have enough flamenco! I hope to do a lot more of these with various guests soon.

Hi Mircea! I just watched this video of Marco Tomayo and was amazed at his speed. While I don’t think I could ever play that fast, I would like to improve my speed. So, how about a speed challenge. We can be given a piece, scales, whatever, with suggestions on how to go about it and track our progress. It would be great to see how much we can improve in three weeks!

    • Debbie This is a GREAT idea!!!! I'd love to do a speed challenge as I've been struggling with reduced speeds on I and M scales so I've been working on PMI scales which add another level of challenge but also definitely improve speed on Longer passages.  hopefully Mircea  will abide!

    • Debbie I also think this is a great idea. Have you watched the Rene Izquierdo livestreams? He talks about improving speed in one of them. I think the key is developing the initial impulse, what they call “arranque” in Spanish. It’s where you do a burst of i, m alternation starting with 2 notes to begin with but you feel it as one impulse not two separate impulses. Then go on to three notes etc, always feeling it as one impuse. It’s kind of hard to explain but I think Rene talks about it in the livestream. I can’t remember which one it was though.

Jaime that rings a bell. I do remember Rene talking about it in a livestream and also can’t remember which one it is.

Debbie David Chidsey Jaime This is a great idea! We have a workshop with Matt Palmer on the topic of "Developing Virtuosity" coming up next month. It doesn't have a fixed date yet, but it should happen sometime in April.

In addition though, I would LOVE to do a technique-related practice challenge - this is something we haven't really done at an advanced level in the past! Perhaps this can be the next advanced community challenge following the composition challenge that will end on April 19th. I am liking the idea the more I type!

I have so many ideas already, but if you have any preference about the format of the excerpts and exercises that you'd like us to go through, let me know.

Debbie Hi Debbie that's a great idea. I keep thinking that I should try some speed exercises in my daily routine but never quite get around to doing them with any great deal of thought behind them

    • Debbie hi Debbie. I managed to find the livestream where Rene talks about reflexive speed. It’s the one he did on 14 November 2020 and it’s starts at around 1:15.

Debbie Jaime Derek So happy to hear you guys would be interested in this! I've spoken with the team and it appears that this is going to happen. The tentative launch date for this challenge will by May 3rd, although it's a bit too far in the future to know for sure. In any case, we are going for it! Thank you for your comments and suggestions!

    Hi Mircea

You mentioned a livestream on Granados Valses Poeticos. That would be a great idea. I assume that you use your own transcription but do you have any thoughts on a pre existing one? I have two versions - one by Benjamin Bolt and one by Richard Brightmore if you are aware of them any thoughts (my teacher at the time I bought it didn't think too highly of the Bolt one).

How about another one on Leyenda (Asturias)

Derek Hi Derek! This is a great idea. I personally play a version based on Joaquin Clerch's transcription. I've made my own changes to it, however, they are quite clearly based on his arrangement. It's such a great one, in my opinion! Same goes for my version of the Valses Sentimentales, although I did make more changes there, including my own transcription of "Dolente". I'd love to do a livestream on Valses Sentimentales soon!

  • Mircea Hey Mircea, I was inspired to start learning the first movement of the Aranjuez after watching your livestream yesterday.  How about a series of livestreams where you go through it in detail?  Some of your fingering solutions are so clever and interesting and I'm sure there are many more that you didn't get a chance to mention yesterday.  Would this be possible?

Jaime Hi Jaime! I've just spoken to the rest of the team, and multiple Aranjuez streams will happen 😎 thank you so much for letting me know that you would like to watch it! Your messages (and those from other users who requested it) are what convinced us to go for it 😁 the current plan is to do one stream per movement, spaced out at about one movement per month. Will announce in this forum once I have more exact dates!

David Chidsey that sounds great! I don't personally play this piece - let's see if we can get Stephanie to do a livestream on tonebase Live, perhaps she would be the best person to talk about this.
