General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)

Hi everyone-

This is Mircea, head of live content at tonebase!

Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.

Examples may include:

  • topics we should cover in future live streams
  • new live stream format ideas
  • people we should try to bring on as guests
  • anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!

If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!

We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

Happy posting!

  • Hi Mircea,

A  topic I would find very useful would be on how to analyse a score and how this can help with interpretation. Things like how to analyse the form and structure of a piece, recognise key modulations, identify stylistic aspects etc.

It would also be great if you could do a livestream with Joaquin Clerch.

    All he best,

    Jaime

Jaime that is a great idea! We are going to go into more theoretical live streams of this kind very very soon - perhaps Steve will even host another, more general one, himself. I'll float the idea around and we'll see how we can integrate it into the upcoming calendar 😎

Also, Joaquin is my teacher and mentor, and I would love to bring him on board for a live stream or two. I can't promise anything, but we will certainly try.

I'd love to do a challenge with the 20 Lettres, problem is that we probably wouldn't be able to provide the scores for that! Now given that most of us are probably willing to invest in a score, especially if there's the incentive of a Community Challenge with accompanying livestreams, how would you feel about participating in a Challenge for which you'd need to buy the scores first? Would you be hesitant to participate or would you go into the challenge with an "Even more so now!" attitude?

    Hi Mircea,

It would be great if you could bring back Irina Kulikova for another live stream and discuss the topics she suggested in the Nov8  workshop.

Rene This is a great idea! I discussed it with her already and it appears she would like to come back soon! Let's see when we can plan it, perhaps in 1-2 months or so.

  • Hi Mircea,

I like Jaime's suggestion too - great suggestion.

I'd also like something on practicing / reading polyrhythms, damping and dynamics..... i.e. the skills that add texture to music and ends up ruining it when not applied correctly.

Mehmet Oh those are very interesting topics! Polyrhythm by itself might be a little niche for most standard guitar rep, but damping and dynamics are entire universes in themselves! I would love to do something along these lines soon. Let me see what I and the rest of the LIVE team can come up with!

    • Mircea  I started working on Landslag VIII. I agree that it would be very helpful to have a session on polyrhythms. Guilli does a great job presenting the 3:2 situation. It would be helpful to expand that approach to other variations. Thank you. Martha Kreipke

Martha Kreipke hi Martha, that sounds like a great idea! We could look at various works that feature polyrhythms and go into some detail about practice strategies, things to look out for, etc. Thank you!

We are planning to bring Irina back soon, I'll float the idea by her of doing a lesson on Brouwer instead of a more general live stream; we'll see what happens. Thank you!

    Hi, Mircea.

Just an idea for a lesson, on standard repertoire for chamber music wtih guitar. Something broad, with representative examples. No need to dig deeply into any of them. A start point from wich we could investigate. This comes from my lack of knowledge on the subject, but I suspect I´m not the only one.

    Thanks a lot.

Igor Hi Igor! This is a great idea. The topic is a bit too broad to tackle in a single live stream, but I would love to integrate some chamber music discussion into upcoming live streams! I will think about the best way to do this and I'm quite sure that we'll figure something out.

Mircea  Igor  “...The topic is a bit too broad totackle in a single live stream...”

Great! Then do lots! It would be amazing if you could get another musician, a flautist, violinist or whoever and do a live stream with them - hopefully that wouldn’t cause too many problems with the lockdown situation.

You could look at a piece or two and the different considerations both of you need to take into account. It would be very useful not just for performers, but also for composers, because balancing things can be tricky for both of them.

Roni Glaser That sounds great, Roni! I will try to make something like this happen soon. I am a HUGE believer in the importance of chamber music (I feel it's quite possibly the most beautiful thing in music!), and I feel it is absolutely underappreciated in the guitar world. Therefore, there is no doubt that I see the educational value in doing not one, but as you say, a bunch of live streams on this topic.

I will be honest with you though, I'm a little worried about doing it right now, in a time when most people cannot get together with friends to play chamber music - I wouldn't want to be... tone deaf, so to say ("hey, here's a wonderful thing that you can't and shouldn't do right now"). Also, California is going into a second lockdown right now, where no mixing of households should happen for the next ~3 weeks. Perhaps I could do something together with Ashley - we'll see!

For now, the live calendar is pretty full for the next few weeks, so whatever we end up doing, it will take about a month or more to plan it in. But I promise you, I am keeping this in mind and would love to do it as soon as possible.

    Hi Mircea

From a selfish point of view a lesson on Suite Castellana by Moreno Torroba or Tarrega's Grand Jota which seems to require most techniques I can think of would be great. On a general subject how about duets/ performing as a duo (trio/quartet....).

    Thanks - Derek

Derek Hi Derek! Glad to see there is so much interest in chamber music in this thread - see Igor 's suggestion right before yours, too. This definitely needs to happen soon!

I've personally never performed the Gran Jota in concert, but other tonebase instructors might have! Let's see if we can get one on board.

I have played a few movements of Torroba's Suite Castellana - let's see if I remember any well enough to do a live lesson on the topic.

Either a topic in a livestream, or maybe a captive topic, but would be great to see in real time  “learn a new piece”. I know Thomas Viloteau has a lesson on this, but it’s working with a piece he already knew somewhat. Would be good to see how the sausage is made so to speak ina professional kitchen

Varun I’ve thought the same too! Maybe Mircea or Martin could suggest a few pieces they might “learn live”, as it were, and we could vote??? Or maybe we could suggest/dare them to learn a piece...😏😆

Roni Glaser Yes! This is planned and already in the works. We don't know exactly when it will happen, but it's coming! Looking forward to this, especially now that I see there is widespread support for it 😁 thank you, Roni, for the original idea, and thank you Varun, for suggesting it independently! You guys are helping a lot.

Varun Roni Glaser Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that we'll be doing something very similar to what you suggested here in our upcoming livestream with TY Zhang, this Saturday at the usual time! Here's the dedicated forum thread, and here's the livestream link.

While we won't be learning the piece (Rameau's "Les Sauvages") live in real time, TY will give a general overview of all aspects of learning a piece, from the beginning all the way to performance preparation right before the concert!

I do hope to also run Roni's more specific idea of actually learning a piece in real time from the ground up on a livestream, too - perhaps even very soon, I'll keep you up to date!
