General Live Stream Suggestions! (Megathread)

Hi everyone-

This is Mircea, head of live content at tonebase!

Let's use this thread as a place for any general live stream suggestions you might have that don't warrant an entirely new thread.

Examples may include:

  • topics we should cover in future live streams
  • new live stream format ideas
  • people we should try to bring on as guests
  • anything else you would like to see on tonebase LIVE!

If you'd rather start a new thread for an individual person or topic suggestion, feel free to do that too!

We will use this thread as a place to centralize suggestions, but feel free to suggested these in individual threads, if you prefer.

Happy posting!

Either a topic in a livestream, or maybe a captive topic, but would be great to see in real time  “learn a new piece”. I know Thomas Viloteau has a lesson on this, but it’s working with a piece he already knew somewhat. Would be good to see how the sausage is made so to speak ina professional kitchen

A few suggestions for topics not directly related to practicing/playing the guitar:

    (i) interview with a luthier about how guitars are made, why some guitars sound better than others, character of different tone woods, and so on.

(ii) biographical overview (possibly with a historical specialist) of some famous guitarist of the past - i.e. Bryan Jeffrey on Sor, Thomas Heck on Giuliani, Graham Wade on Segovia.

(iii) discussion from the perspective of psychology on music and performance: how does musical memory work; why do so many of us get nervous on stage (or in front of a videocamera)?

(iv) organological account of the development of the guitar from its emergence in the renaissance to its arrival in the early twentieth century in the form we know today. (Something similar to what Brandon presented, but restricted to the guitar family, and with more detail.)

    (v) Another idea for Brandon, for those interested in historical instruments: "Getting started in Early Music" - where to begin (which instrument?); how to find a luthier (and later a teacher); taking the first steps using a modern guitar.

(vi) overview of online guitar resources: how to find legal scores on the net (IMSLP, Boije, etc.); where to find high quality performance videos (GSI, Siccas, Partita Studio, etc.); where to ask questions or join discussions (apart from here!): (Delcamp, earlyguitar.ning, etc.).

(vii) a couple of guitarists I would enjoy hearing interviewed: Marcin Dylla and Petra Polackova (to name just two of many!).

Sorry, that's a lot of suggestions! I'm just 'thinking out loud' ...

David David, these are great!!! Please keep these great ideas coming - I would love to make them happen, and I think they are wonderful.

      1. Talking to a luthier is a great idea! Let's see who we can get on board, I already have a couple of ideas here. I'll run it by the rest of the tonebase crew and we'll see what we can make happen!
      2. Wonderful! I'm not personally connected to any of the three you suggested, but I'd love to talk to either one of them, or to other specialists. We'll see what we can do here, too.
      3. I have great news for you! Steve Goss is going to be tackling the topic of stage fright in his upcoming stream, here! (<- click!) Add it to your calendar and make sure to join us this Sunday!
      4. Great idea! I'll reach out to a couple of people.
      5. Wonderful - I would love to do another live stream with Brandon! And this is a fascinating, and for some people immediately useful, topic.
      6. Never thought about this one! We'll see if there is enough to talk about in an entire live stream - let me have a think about that.
      7. I love Marcin and Petra! Let's see what we can do.

I think about Paco de Lucia and all the flamenco forums and YouTube videos with guitarists claiming they understand the secret to his picado--and it's all filled with disagreement. As far as I know, no one ever sat down with the master himself and had him detail in his own words the mechanics of his picado.  On the classical guitar side of this, the only person who seems to have anything close to this status is Manuel Barrueco. There are so many players who consider his technique to be the perfect example, and yet, like PDL, no one has sat down with him and discussed in great detail the mechanics of his technique.  It's almost like interviewers are afraid to bore the master with trivial questions about technique, but I think it would be a real shame if it never happens. Once they are gone, there's no going back.  How great would it be to have a video of Ida Presti or Django Reinhardt or Segovia, telling us about their technique?  So, that is my recommendation for a workshop, Manuel Barrueco, but I'd also like to suggest more workshops with other players who will not be around forever and have a lot of insight about the guitar and its history. John Williams or Oscar Ghiglia or ?

      Dean Hi Dean,

This is a great idea - and something I fully agree with you on.

I know for a fact that several of my friends and mentors, including my professor, Joaquín Clerch, Marco Tamayo, and others sat down with Manuel Barrueco several times to discuss technique. This being said, I don't think any of these encounters were ever recorded. He does occasionally address questions of technique in his masterclasses, and I would absolutely love to get a closer look at his approach through a technique workshop on tonebase live. I have admired his technical philosophy for decades now, and would be honored to moderate such a discussion with him. I promise I will do anything in my power to try to get him on board.

The same goes for John Williams, by the way - only perhaps even a little more challenging, given that he has stopped performing publicly a while ago. If there has ever been a platform that had a shot at making either one of these workshops happen, I do believe it to be tonebase. Therefore, the rest of the team and I will do our absolute best to try to turn these into a reality. Rest assured that if such lectures or workshops take place, you will hear about it!

    Hi Mircea !

I would like very much to hear about the history of music interpretation.

How the renaissance, romantic and “modern” music interpretation has evolved from Segovia (or older) to nowadays.

    Thanks for your amazing work!!

    Dario

Dario Caruso Hi Dario! I agree, this is a great idea! As a starter, check out Steve Goss' first tonebase workshop, back in the day when we were still just streaming on social media. He tackled the topic of "seminal recordings" and how they can have an outsize influence on guitar repertoire. I'd love to tackle this more specific topic in the future, though!

(The sound quality wasn't the best, our equipment was very limited at the time. Hope you'll still enjoy it though!)

      Mircea

I am very happy to see 2 lives concerning "my request":

Martin Zimny: Dia de Noviembre Live Lesson + Interpretation Comparison

      And

Steve Goss: Programming and Repertoire: Why do we play the music we play?

Unfortunately, I can’t follow the lives but it will a pleasure to watch the replay!

Mircea  I't would be good to have advice on creating a repertoire. There are a lot of excellent courses on individual pieces on the site now, and it would be good to have guidance on selecting a set to learn at each ability level. For example an intermediate  set that would cover phrasing, articulation, speed improvements, baroque, classical, modern etc.

Follow on events could perhaps focus in more detail on individual  aspect of the chosen repertoires. Personally, I like being told what to learn :)

John This sounds interesting for me too, sounds like it could be quite a few live streams.

I'm still thinking about what Steve Goss said about what pieces I could begin a concert with, you know, the ones you can play when someone gives you a guitar at a party no matter drunk you are... it'd be good to have a few more of those.

I'd like to find more cool and less standard repertoire as well.

John this is a great idea! Let me see what I can come up with here, perhaps I could get one of our content experts such as Erin (head of guitar content) on board - she has been hard at work organizing some of the existing tonebase lessons into 10 levels for the Level System: a new site feature that will be launched very soon!

Mircea it looks like you've solved the problem with "Tonebase Levels". That's a great thing to add, and I guess you could have live sessions to discuss each of the levels and how the pieces in each level work together.

I've been with Tonebase on and off right from the start, but I have to say that in the last few months it's really come together to offer a compelling package for the guitar enthusiast.

Really enjoying the live sessions also, the first Recording session was great and I can't wait for the others. If you think you're playing well, then listen to a recording for the unvarnished truth (well in my case anyway) :)

John thank you so much for that, John! This is so great to hear. You've still given us a great idea with your suggestion, and we're currently planning a very special repertoire-related livestream. I can't comment on it too much before I know that it will certainly happen, but stay tuned - we might have something great in store for you on this topic. In the meantime, very happy to hear the level system is helping! 😁

Mircea How about a live stream on "El Decamerón Negro"?

I seem to remember you saying on the live stream with Steve Goss that it's one of those pieces you can play at any stage of the party no matter how drunk you are...😁

I could imagine a few of us would be interested, Jaime probably. Your maestro's lesson on Tonebase is nice, but I'd like to go into a bit more detail.

Roni Glaser Hi Roni! Wait, me personally? I think you might be getting it confused with a quote by someone else 😋 if you know the exact timestamp in the specific livestream with Steve, feel free to send it in here, so that I may clarify whatever misunderstanding might have arisen 😉

I'd love to schedule that - the piece is not currently in my active repertoire, although I did play it many years ago; however, I can probably find someone to do it who's a true expert on it 😎 let me think about who that might be. In the meantime, you have any ideas, let me know!

Mircea forgive me for creating false impressions about you and your playing!
To clarify, the context was NOT that you said “I can el Decameron negro however drunk I get”, it was in the stagecraft live stream (I think) within the discussion of the first piece to programme in a concert, which should be one you know really well, and Steve said something along the lines of “you know when you’re at a party and someone says ‘oh, you’re a guitarist, here’s a guitar!’, and no matter how drunk you are, there are one or two pieces you can always play”. I thought you said very briefly after that, that it would be el Decameron negro for you. So sorry, you didn’t say it directly, and sorry if I misheard you the piece!!!🙇
