Learn how to virtually duplicate yourself within a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and produce a duo recording single-handedly or with your socially distanced chamber music partner! Since chamber music has suffered greatly from current restrictions, ensembles worldwide suddenly were no longer able to publish any creative output. • Great topic!

I was amazed and fascinated by the Virtual Guitar Orchestra project (200 classical guitarists) and have tried "duplicating" myself after the recording course.

I doubt I'll be attending live though - it works out to be 5am in Sydney - but I'll definitely watch later.

Any chance of finding out if anyone has tried some of the low latency services / applications for online practice sessions (JamKazam, Aloha et cetera)? It's not "recording" but a similar topic.

Mehmet Hi Mehmet. I tried Jamkazam last year for practising with friends duets and quartets. It was fine for practising but because two of the others had poor internet speeds we could only really do duets between the two of us with decent internet speeds although the others could listen and they said it sounded fine and in time with each other. Since then Jamkazam claim to have greatly improved the system but now they have started charging to use it - I'd be interested to hear if anyone has used it more recently as I quite liked it.

  • I started making duet recordings last fall and it is a lot of fun. Here are some of my examples.

In this recording I am working with a guitarist who lives in London. Chris recorded with a green screen and “transported” himself into my music room in St. Louis, MO, USA. We both recorded using iPhones. I transferred my video to Chris – he likes doing the final editing. He uses an editing package for his ipad.

I recorded this in January. I heard the piece in a virtual concert and the composer was kind enough to send me the score.

I have been doing my recordings with an iPhone and MV88+ microphone and then using the free software SHOTCUT (on my windows PC) for the final video.

    Hi Martin

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I had a go at doing this last year (before I got my green screen). First attempt is attached the timing goes a bit astray. I was going to use a click track but there was some reason why I couldn't do it (I can't remember why). I had another attempt for a project last Christmas but there was a bit of tricky bit in the piece I was recording and I kept playing one section too fast and I ran out of time so I've put it aside until next Christmas. Would be fun to start it again now that I've reorganised my equipment and bought a green screen.

Gokce Turkmendag Hi Gokce. Yes it's good fun. This one I did by filming myself in front of a grey wall and played with the Opacity setting. I've done a few solo videos with the green screen where I've played with the background - I played Giuliani in the Schoenberg Palace in Vienna :-). Maybe after the workshop we should do a challenge where we all upload one half of a duet played in front of a green screen and someone else takes it and plays the other part and picks a background :-)

    • Derek I just finished my self duo in front of the green screen. Since we both have a green screen, maybe we can try it for another piece? This one for example.

Gokce Turkmendag Hi Gokce. That would be fantastic. When you say 'this one' do you mean the one I'm playing 'Buenos Reyes'? I'm happy to do anything (as long as it's not too difficult). This one is from a set of arrangements of South American folk songs by John William's father Len Williams. I'll try to do a recording of both parts over the weekend and post the individual parts on here. I've attached the score for you to have a look at.

    • Derek yes I meant Buenes Reyes. You don't have to record both parts, choose your favorite one and I will record the other on that.

Gokce Turkmendag Hi Gokce. I'll do part II if you would like to do the melody part 1. Once we have the recording we can decide on a background - maybe somewhere in South America :-)

Gokce Turkmendag I can sit to the left or would you rather sit on that side :-)

    • Derek South America will be great, I always wanted to visit there. You can sit on the left, I usually prefer right, just as at my self duo 🤪

Gokce Turkmendag Hi Gokce. I've recorded take 1.  https://youtu.be/Zsp4fdT-glg

I hope that you can download it. I've also tried to attach the file but it was too big. If you can't download the video we'll have to try another way of sending it to you.  I recorded it at 140 bpm and there's a metronome count in of 34 bars ( I think). I didn't use a mic I used an under saddle pickup so I actually had the metronome going all of the time which didn't record to the DAW but it did record to the video soundtrack (I used my phone for the video). Without the metronome my timing was a little bit variable! When I edited the video I added the DAW sound file and then cut the audio from the phone leaving the four bar count in to make it easier for you. if it works we can have another try to improve it - varying the dynamics etc. Have fun Derek

Gokce Turkmendag Hi Gokce. That's better! I have exported the video again, this time at a lower quality (720p) so the file size is now small enough to attach. Let me now how you get on with it :-)

    • Derek that's great, I'll try it tomorrow and record it as soon as possible, preferably in a good hair day 😊

    • Derek Hi Derek, I finished recording. I can go to the video step if you are happy with the sound, balance etc. The only problem with your video is the size. Your head is missing some parts on the top. When I will put myself beside you, we will not fit on the screen, so I have to resize your video, then your head will be seen cut. I will try something (not putting a hat, already tried 😂).

Also we have to choose a background. Is the piece about Reyes, Bolivia? If it is so, I couldn't find any good background. Maybe you have something in your mind?

    • Derek you can send me some background photo suggestions by email, if you have any. [email protected]
