Khiem's diary: Recuerdos de la Alhambra

Today I practiced the left hand shifting at the first 8 measures and try to make them legato. Speed: 115-125-130bpm.

Khiem this is really good, well done. A smooth tremolo is somethong that I still striggle with!

    • Ron thank you a lot Ron! I find that a smooth tremolo is difficult to maintain if I stop practing tremolo for a while. This technique seems to demand a lot of maintenance and periodic rehearse, I think

Revisiting your Practice Diary always makes me guilty of not having practice enough Tremolo that day!

    • Martin you are just busy, Martin. No worry, you will blast it.

This tremolo practice makes me tired quickly, so I only practice it maximum 1 hour per day, and I mix the practice with other easier non-tremolo piece. Otherwise it is too much for me.

  • Here is my practice today. Polishing the nail carefully with sand paper does help a bit with the sound. I try to use the least movement of right hand fingers in order to relax.

While practicing, I had to stop regularly as soon as I noticed there was tension building up on the right hand forearm. If I did not stop, the right hand forearm would be tense and it would be much harder to relax it afterwards. So in my own experience, you should take short breaks to prevent tension as soon as you notice it coming.

    • Khiem Nguyen So beautiful, Khiem! Your tone is so sweet and round. I’m going for a walk now and I think I’ll listen to you as I walk.

Khiem Nguyen Wow, this is getting better and better! Your tremolo gets smooth and it's nice to see that you are getting confident enough to implement different colors in your tremolo as well! That's especially challenging as each change of position changes the resistance of your attack! Good job!

    • Martin thank you so much for your encouragement, Martin! :) I am experiementing with changing the color, and dynamic. This piece has been always a big challenge for me, for both metal focus and physical endurance. I have taken a short break in the last 3 days from practicing this piece. I plan to come back with practice early this week.

Khiem Nguyen This is sounding really good Khiem. I do play this piece but not as well as I would like. I just came to do some stuff on my computer and listened to this before I started. Now I have to go back and start practising again - the computer stuff can wait!

    • Khiem Nguyen it sounds very nice Khiem.... I enjoy your melody , you change the tremolo from 2 cord to 1 cord or later to 3 cord very clear...I do not note any tension in your playing.... continue like that!!!!

  • I took a break from this piece for several days. Today I come back with the piece. My recording today has a lot more buzzing and mistakes though. Maybe because it was recorded at the end of the evening :D. It felt quite hard to keep up the tremolo at the last 1/3 part. I was at the edge of tensing my right hand.

    • Jack Stewart thank you so much Jack! I have a long way to tackle many aspects of this piece: phrasing of the bass lines, rubato, dynamic, speed, etc. Every piece is challenging in several different ways! Your piece is also really challenging and you have done a fantastic job! Bravo to you, too!
