Week 1: Etude Entrée!
Welcome to the Main Thread for the first week of "Etude Extravaganza" practice challenge!
- Choose an etude from a composer that captures your interest. It could be a soothing Sor etude, a technical Giuliani masterpiece, a Carcassi finger exercise, a harmonically rich Brouwer composition, or a rhythmically challenging Villa-Lobos piece. You're encouraged to experiment with pieces from composers you're not accustomed to or push your boundaries with a technically demanding work.
- Commit to regular practice and share your journey with the community. Aim to practice daily and upload at least two videos per week to showcase your progress. This will not only aid in keeping you dedicated and motivated but also enables you to share your musical journey with our tonebase family.
- Share your favorite etude or recording that epitomizes the concept of "Etude Extravaganza." Your submission will serve as inspiration for others and construct a vibrant repertoire of potential pieces for fellow members to explore.

Sor Op 6 no 11
One of the two Sor pieces that I know. First time I heard it was on youtube performed by Park Kyuhee and after listening to so many different versions, I still like hers and Maestro Pierri 's performance of this piece the best.
I think I played this in one of the previous challenge before. other than the first few bars, I've forgotten the entire piece. But here's the first section.

Work on it a bit and manage to get to part 2 before the key change. Will work on it over the weekend.

You are just amazing guys. We are on the second day of the challenge and you already have a couple of recordings of Etudes that you already control very well.
Bravo, this is very impressive
I started to work on a Sor study (opus 60 no 1 ) for beginners and should be able to post a first recording this week. Nothing compares to your skills but it's a beginning

It's true, there is a LOT of talent in this group, but I think what makes us most amazing is our willingness to put ourselves out there and support one another in regards to something that is very personal and vulnerable. YOU are amazing, and I can't wait to hear what you have to share.

Andre Bernier Thanks! I actually learn them before so it is not like previous challenges when I had to learn from scratch so it is much easier.
I've not heard of Op 60 no 1 before but you can't go wrong with any Sor's pieces, even those he composed as his annoyances..

Is there somewhere on the site where I can find a list of etudes i should be working on and down load the PDFs of the sheet music?

nherschman It all depends on your musical taste and abilities. Sor is always a good place to start, and you can find lots of video lessons and scores of good studies here. Probably Sanel Redzic’s videos on Sor studies would be a good place to start. Maybe martin from the TB team could give more guidance.

When you start at the bottom, you've got nowhere to go but up, am I right?
Two very common/popular pieces that have been on my radar for a while are the Sor Study in D (I'm sure there's a more proper name for it - anyone?) and Carcassi's Etude No. 7, Opus 60.
I've worked on these pieces a LONG time ago and have been wanting to get back to them and do them justice. Here's where I'm at with them at this point...
For the Sor, I actually skip to the end about half-way through. Also, wondering - if anyone else has played the Sor piece - if you play the melody notes with free or rest stroke?
(Not sure why I still had my AirPods in!)

Steve Pederson that's indeed two common and popular! I personally rarely play rest stroke on melodies, I usually work on timbers and separation of voices across the harmony and moving parts. I think you kept your AirPods for the «cool» look you get!

Blaise Laflamme Ah the scythes remorseless swing, a long way from Carcassi. Had to look them up and give a listen.

Steve Pederson this Sor is one of my favourites. Nicely payed, but you skip the best part! I don’t play the melody with apoyando, maybe only at a few moments where I want to give an extra accentuation.
The Carcassi is another evergreen. Very nice. You could colour the voices more to differentiate between the arpeggio parts, tremolo movement and bass lines. Looking forward to hearing more of this….
