how to record?

Many of you seem to have mastered the art of recording and posting your pieces with great video and audio. I am clueless how to go about it. Where do I find basic info? Would like to participate in the year-end challenge. thanks, Peter

  • Hi Peter, I guess recording is a fairly large topic, and I am sure people will have different viewpoints on it . If I recall correctly, Martin has posted some tutorial videos on the topic of recording, here on tonebase. But very briefly, for the limited scenario of quickly creating a video + audio of a piece or section of piece (for example, to send to a teacher) I have found the following simple setup to be effective:

    1) 1 or 2 good mics 2) good A/D converter(s). 3) software on laptop (OBS studio, open-source)  4) video camera such as one used for video conferencing.

With that setup, within a short time it is possible to create an .mp4 to upload.

I am sure people have other solutions.

    Hope this helps,

    James

Hi Peter, I am not the best source of information for this but I will try to provide some info. Hopefully some of the more accomplished videographers will join in.

I believe your smart phone will record pretty decent videos. For that you would need a stand, even a small table top tripod will work. From there I would suggest going on YouTube for a tutorial. You do not need an elaborate technical explanation, just the basics. Many of the postings are done with. just an iPhone or equivalent.

I use an iPad and a usb mic (apogee mic+), a tripod with a boom for the mic and a top mounted iPad bracket. and the program- Filmic Pro (an app from apple app.) I don't do any post production other than trimming.

I think I am getting the hang of it, less complicated than I had thought🙂. I have the Scarlett 2i2 with a decent mic connected to a MacBook Pro. I need to experiment with different recording software, Quicktime and Zoom don't give me good enough audio. GarageBand has great sound recording but no video. Will try the two packages you recommend, thanks again.
