martin Both of those times 9am or 9pm would have been better than 2am my time zone when I'm on a night shift!😱

Debbie I rather felt the same when the study group was first announced. Ughh, not that old 'warhorse' again! But then I happened to hear Evangelina Mascardi's performance of the piece on the lute. Being something of a lutenist myself, I thought, well, why not give it a try? While it's not particularly idiomatic to the instrument, it's at least playable, which is more than I can say for most of Bach's so-called 'lute works'! Anyhow, I find I'm enjoying the 'learning experience' far more than I imagined I would!

David Krupka I love Evangelina Mascardi. She’s great. I tried the lute for awhile but had to stop after developing hand neuropathy and the double courses were too much for me. With that in mind I have to choose to spend time on pieces I really enjoy and this isn’t one of them! 🤣

Debbie I remember your mentioning some time ago that you were taking up the lute. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out. I do think the modern guitar has certain ergonomic advantages over various 'period' instruments - in my own case, the higher tension of the strings helps stabilize my left hand on the fretboard, something (as a result of injury) I struggle with on the lute. Still, I muddle on ...

Btw, I agree entirely that it makes no sense to spend (waste?) time learning music we don't actually enjoy!

David Krupka I do remember us chatting  about the lute before. I really enjoyed it while I played. Maybe someday I’ll try again. Or baroque guitar maybe if it’s easier. But for now you can play for both of us!

I am really looking forward to this. I have just gotten to the point where I have memorized the piece. As you get older, you find that it takes more time to memorize a piece, especially when there are slight variations in the bass notes. 42 measures times 16 notes per measure equals 672 notes you need to store in your internal RAM.

One other comment ... these kinds of "challenges" are precisely the kind of things that I love to do, and I hope there is more of this coming in the months ahead.

Marc Adler I agree - this is an interesting experiment in group learning that I hope will continue. (I do feel the format could stand a little 'tweaking' though.)
