Week 2: Vienna in 19th !🍰

Welcome to the Main Thread for the second week of the "Around the 19th Century Guitar World" challenge!

Vienna was a hub for all classical music in the 19th century. Home to Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, among others, the classical guitar was alive and well in the 19th century. In Vienna in the 19th century classical guitar composers were heavily influenced by orchestral composers and had relationships with them; Giuliani played cello in the premiere of Beethoven’s 7th symphony and Mertz arranged Schubert’s Songs for Piano and Voice on guitar.

  • Giuliani - Grazioso Op 50 No 23

I'll start off this second week with a piece from Giuliani's 'Le Papillon' Opus 50. This piece has lots of opportunities for adding musical interest through dynamics, tone color, and articulation. Listening to myself play it, I'm not sure I took full advantage of those opportunities.

I really do not play much Giuliani at all. His musical style just does not appeal to me as much as that of other composers of the era. That said, I need to take the time to explore his music more so I can better appreciate it. I think I'll play a couple pieces from this opus, and then maybe go on to his Op 46 ('Choix de mes fleurs cheries') which I love but have never played.

Eric Phillips Nicely done, Eric. I agree with your opinion of Giuliani. I generally don't find his music as interesting as Sor's or many other 19th C. guitarists. Though he has his moments, as you just demonstrated.

I see that you cleverly sidestepped your promise not to submit another recording in the 1st week by sneaking this one into the second week. 🙂

    • Eric Phillips great job with this one Eric! The phrasing is beautiful here, and I'm sure you can find some more places to add dynamics!

    • Hannah Murphy Thank you so much, Hannah. I'm sorry your livestream got cut off today. Were there any other pieces by Mertz that you were going to present?

    • Eric Phillips yes! Actually wanted to show his arrangement of Standchen by Schubert. There's actually a fantastic Tonebase lesson on it by Petrit Ceku here: https://app.tonebase.co/guitar/courses/player/petrit-ceku-teaches-schuberts-standchen-arranged-by-mertz

    • Hannah Murphy Yes, I’ve watched his lessons on Mertz’ Schubert arrangements and they’re excellent. On Standchen, I just can’t seem to get that 3 against 2 rhythm.

      Eric Phillips Very impressive, Eric.

The piece does benefit from your slightly quicker tempo than my version.

    • Jack Stewart Oh my god, how could you keep a straight face?!?!?! I nearly busted my gut laughing so hard at you!

Is this what they mean when they say our slow practice should be even slower than we think? Do I see a masterclass livestream from Jack being offered on the subject of slow practice?

    • Jack Stewart haha! I think you're confident enough to double the speed 😂
