Nora's practice diary Atahualpa Yupanqui

I was inspired by the Milonga of Roddy, to return to Atahualpa Yupank and his milonga " La estancia vieja" (The old farm). I would like to play it also in the concert together with Fantasias, if there is enough time. If not, it is a good opportunity anyway to dedicate time to this nostalgic music, trying to play it more clean, whithout dirty notes, clear arpegios, look for better changes of position of the left hand and of course a nicer interpretation.

Nora Torres-Nagel Beautiful! I've only recently discovered of Atahualpa's music and got myself some scores, I especially love the Cancion del Abuelo #1. You have already some beautiful colors shining, especially the characteristic glissandi in that music! Love it, keep up the good practice!!

  • This is great, Nora! I have never heard this music, nor have I ever heard of the composer. Can you tell me anything about him? It's very evocative and (like you said) nostalgic music.

    • Eric Phillips Thanks Eric. Atahualpa was a mixture of indian and French. He wrote folkloric music for the guitar and also the letters. Very very comunist!!! but a comunist of lateinamerican of last siecle....very idealist, believing that we all deserve respect and a good life and he hated the explotation of the human by the human. The letters of some of his songs have a social and /or political content. He was prosecute by the militars and had to emigrate . He lived in Paris some years...but his heart was in Argentina,a very honest, modest and he lived always acoording to his ideas, without luxus but with dignity of course. He had a modest , warm house in "Cerro colorado" in Cordoba, Argentinien. A beautiful  and magic place, I was there, today is a small museum...his house, so modest  and plenty of music and warmess, by el rio Colorado (the red river), and there is a tree a big tree by the house...and there , exactly on the side of that tree he was buried...anything indicates that his bones are there...no cross... he was also atheist. A beautiful song of him : "Duerme negrito"...(go to sleep litle blackboy)...
