Composing Etudes: Feedback

Welcome to the second week of the Etudes Composition Challenge!

In this livestream I will go over your sketches that were submitted here in the forum to provide feedback and answer any questions you may have along with providing solutions and suggestions; let's keep that motivation flowing!

Although this livestream sounds simple, it is very important! Just like a performance masterclass, you can learn so much just by watching and listening as I go over ya'll's submissions!

The goal is to have something ready for the watch party next week if you'd like to submit your work to be presented. Feel free to continue asking for feedback post-event if you didn't get to submit on time.

Sadly I already know I won't be able to make the 20th October as I have something on that evening

  • Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the feedback on the pieces I submitted. Sorry I couldn't attend the session live, but I watched it later. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and give your thoughts.

Regarding notation oddities, I know they are there, but frankly I just do not have the time or the will to figure out how to manipulate the software to make the score look better. I find that when I try, I can waste hours trying to figure out something like, "How do I move those ledger lines over?" I usually end up frustrated and resentful. So, not being a professional, I really don't want to go down that road, since it just doesn't matter enough to me. I have no intention of ever purchasing any software either. I'd rather get some new strings!

I'm not too sure what I will do next, but I guess I'll just try writing some more. Is there anything in particular you think I should focus on? I feel a little "direction-less" (if that's  a word).

    Thanks,

    Eric

I just watched the first hour (which I missed).  All good feedback, thank you Ashley!  Unfortunately I won't have time to incorporate the feedback before next week as I'm gone for a few days.  Like Eric, I also get frustrated using notation software but someday I'd like to try again when I have more time. It's still been a fun and useful exercise.

If I do anything before next Wed. it might be to make a recording either of one of the pieces I did or the etude Eric did for my prompt (still working on a section of that one).

  • Many thanks for your feedback Ashley (Ash) 🙏🎶. You made me realise the amount of material that is available in this one single etude sketch. It's really helpful how you dissected the many ideas and how they can be germinated into its own thing. I mean, I usually just go with the flow as the music comes, as its more important to me that whatever I come up with should compositionally sounds beautiful. I need to strike a balance between the two worlds and grow as a composer. Currently I'm working on an etude using repeated notes and limiting myself to write using only two strings, the Low A and Low E strings. If something worth sharing develops, I will try to share it here. Thanks Again. 🙂
