What Strings are you using? 🧵

What strings are you using, and where do you purchase them?

I use a unique mix consisting of:

  • D'Addario Composite basses
  • 3rd and strings are Savarez Alliance Carbon Strings (blue, hard tension)
  • Augustine Regal 1st string (purple)

I am generally super happy with my strings, especially with the basses. The Augustine 1st string is BEAUTIFUL but wears down super fast!

There is something clearly wrong with me. I do not and have never ever liked D'Addario strings. I find them stiff, uncomfortable and very vanilla sounding. I feel like that is a VERY unpopular opinion. For years I used Luthier Silver. I always found them a nice basic good sounding string. Augustine blues for "in a pinch, I can get them on the ground". Currently I've been trying different ones just to see and I splurged on Knobloch Sterling Silver MTs. Yes, very nice. I doubt I'll ever buy again.

I absolutely love Aquila Sugar strings. I've gotten them twice. They feel very nice, grippy in a different way on the trebles. Warm, clear, just really attractive to my ear. And I really really love Knobloch Leo Browers. However, I think they will soon be gone. Again there is a very slight texture on the trebles I love and really rich sounding to me and balanced.

A SUPER nice combo is the Gohar Vardanyan set on SBM under customer combinations. Really worth trying out and someday I will go back to them most likely.

Currently I am going to try as light tension as I can find due to a finger thing (posted on general if anyone has tips) and see if it helps extend my play. I'm picking up the Pepe Romero Glow Set (mostly because they seem to get glowing reviews.) and The Dogal Diamante Extra Soft to see what they are like. Here's hoping.

Cool! Using D'Addario Composites now. Is mixing string brands common?

Scott Sundsvold I have done this all the time! But depending on the projects that are coming up (or not) I might go with an all D'Addario or Savarez set as well!

Cantiga Premium Creation red (normal tension)

1st and 2nd are new Cristal and 3rd (G) is Alliance.

This works for both the Simplicio and the Friedrich.

I feel that normal tension strings have a better sustain.
