  • Antonio Cano – El Eco

Here is a piece by Cano that is very different than the one I posted yesterday. It’s a blast to play! The title becomes obvious once you listen to it. The shifting is absolutely crazy (bordering on ridiculous). I botched more than a few of them, but I hope it is still listenable.

Eric Phillips Awesome! I've never heard of that composer either, but as Emma was pointing out this could be a great musical exercise for shifts!

Jack Stewart He sight-readed that?!?! I had exactly one sight-reading exam, it was for the entrance exam at the Royal Academy and Steve Goss was in the Jury. Thankfully I looked like a total geek back then, I don't think he recognized me (yet), otherwise we probably wouldn't do so much livestreams together 🤡 I am really bad at sight reading.

    • Martin Thank you, Martin. No, I was not sight-reading. I’m not sure why Jack thought I was. That’s pretty cool, though, about Steve Goss being on your jury!

Eric Phillips Probably because no one wants to imagine that besides posting video submissions on tonebase you still manage to find time to actually practice these pieces 🙈🔥

    • Martin We won’t tell them that you magically turned me into John Williams. Unfortunately, I’m John Williams after drinking a couple bottles of Rioja! (Actually, I bet he’d still play way better than me even with all that wine.)

    • Eric Phillips I must confess I did not know Antonio Cano 😐.

Eric Phillips It's sounding great, Eric! A lot of work to make the repeats sounding interesting, but you did!

Eric Phillips I assumed you were sight reading because you present so much music. I am retired and I thought I was practicing a lot but I can barely get 2 pieces together in a month. So you;'re not sight reading? - just masterful at learning new music quickly. Either way it is humbling.

    • Jack Stewart It's a combination of having the week off of work (all schools here are closed for a week in February), being completely obsessed, and choosing easier pieces to play.

Martin I had assumed he was sight reading because of his prodigious submissions.

I have a similar experience from having attended a Pepe Romero masterclass when I had only been playing for about a year. I shudder to think he might remember me. I mentioned this in the submission for your master class.

Eric Phillips 😂I'm afraid Pepe's expression is too cordial for that memory

Nora Torres-Nagel You are doing great, Nora. This is a really challenging piece but you have it well under your fingers. You played it very all the way thru to the end. I really would like to hear/see your progress.  Keep going, you got this!

Nora Torres-Nagel very beautiful Nora 💐. I can already hear how it will sound when practiced for a longer period of time. Your recording sound has this sweetness I love very much on older recordings. Is there a special equipment you are using ?

    • Olli thanks Olli. No! I have only a "Fame" Studio CU5 microphone, which I bought when I begun to record myself by studying otherwise ...with the microphone of my computer sounds terrible....

I hope to find the time to listen all the workshops of Martin on recording....

Hey guys, I joined this challenge very late , so the pieces I submit are works in process, I won't be available to do any updates before the watch party.

This piece used to be a favorite encore by Segovia and Angel Romero.

I'm glad to see you here again.

    • Barney Well done, Barney. That is so difficult to play in that key. I’ve got some Torroba in store for next week too.
