Sure been quiet around Tonebase without the monthly Challenges. Since my return from Spain and Portugal back in December, I have been working on Carlevaro's Milonga Suite which is amongst Carlevaro's last compositions. For the Milonga Suite, Carlevaro returned to his Uruguayan folklore roots which he combines with his modern musical language. Here is Milonga Triste from the Milonga Suite. I am now off to France, Scotland and Ireland for a three month stay, trying to avoid the madness here in the US. Hope you are all well! Eric Phillips Thanks for remembering your neighbours to the north, Eric! (However, the only ones needing to apologize reside in Washington!) I remain (cautiously) optimistic that cooler heads will eventually prevail, and that business leaders will remind the 'decision makers' that their proposed 'policies' (both economic and demographic) will hurt everyone, Americans included.

Blaise Laflamme I completely agree with you, Blaise! ToneBase appears to be developing into a platform designed to recruit students for private instruction. Too much of the recent live content has felt like an exercise in marketing. And what has become of the pre-recorded instructional material? We used to receive notices in our email when something new was released, but I can scarcely remember the last time I saw one. (Or is it just me?) Anyhow, I think your idea of creating our own challenge is spot on. And no one better than you and Eric Phillips (the long reigning champions of the event) to propose something new! (I would suggest something myself, but as dead-last in the video contribution derby, I don't think I've earned that right ...)

David Krupka And just in case you guys (Blaise Laflamme and Eric Phillips ) need any ideas (sorry, I can't help it!) I'll remind you that Spring is just around the corner - there must be a challenge them there!

David Krupka Eric Phillips I understand they're putting strong efforts on private instruction and public events, but the active/participation/sharing activities like the challenges are what some of us prefer and/or enjoy the most! In fact it's the main reason I got a life subscription here! The latest communication I got was last week about HVL Suite Populaire Brésilienne with Fabio Zanon, we're still getting awesome content production from Tonebase, but we slowly loosing traction in the community without interacting activities IMHO. I'll start a thread in the general discussion to brainstorm about the idea of managing our own community challenges, with probably a different name to ensure we don't overlap with the official challenges from the Team.

Dale Needles Thanks for sharing great music with us again, Dale! I'm still on the journey of learning Giuliani's "Choix de mes fleurs cheries, Op.46". Now I am learning the no.9 la Rose, if there is a monthly challenge again, I hope to share it with you all here.

Blaise Laflamme @everyone here in the community, hope you're all doing well. A few weeks back, I'd commented on one of Eric's YouTube videos about how miss the community challenges.
I totally agree with Blaise about how vital the community aspect of this site is. When I signed up for TB, my first goal was to just to get some video lessons to start with. I come from a place where there's little interest in western classical music, let alone classical guitar. So, in a way I feel lonely in a musical sense. However, this online community has filled that gap with so much love, compassion and support in my journey as an amateur musician.
So, I'd love it if someone would take the initiative to start a community challenges. It could be Dale, Blaise, Eric or anyone else who want to volunteer to initiate that.
Martin, I hope you're having a great holiday. We miss you and hope to see you back soon here.

Nijwm Bwiswmuthiary Eric Phillips David Krupka With Martin coming back soon and hopefully a Challenge following I think Eric's idea of creating a "Share What You're Working On" thread in the General Discussion will fit the bill at moment. Eric, are you willing to initiate it?

Blaise Laflamme yeah, Eric should do it. Btw, on an unrelated note, I was checking out the latest "masters" course here on TB. The price for that course is way above my budget, perhaps that course is for advanced level players anyway.
I'm also starved of livestreams with guests. We haven't had one in a while. Perhaps it's understandable since Martin's away on holiday. Hopefully, once he's back we'll have some of those back. While I joined only a couple of years back, I have watched recorded livestreams done by Mircea and Martin that lasted for more than 90 mins.

Eric Phillips That's great. Currently, I'm working on Villa Lobos prelude 5. Hopefully, I can post my progress soon. Otherwise, I'm happy just to hear members play and be there for them.

Dale Needles Wow, Dale! That was beautiful. Your phrasing, tone and interpretation seem spot on. You handle the introduction of the gentle Milonga melody amongst Carlevaro's challenging harmonic structure masterfully. Thanks for sharing this, a nice memory of your playing it the other day.
Have a great (and hopefully sane) trip. Sounds great!
I stepped away from the computer for a day and come back to a plethora of activity from the community which your posting has prompted. That is very encouraging.

Jack Stewart Thanks, Jack. I appreciate your comments and feel this piece finally came together as I was about to leave for my trip. Hopefully I will not regress too much while I am traveling. Currently we are in Paris for 9 nights and then to the south of France. Take care.

Dale Needles that was just so beautiful, Dale. Great piece and so well controlled and musically performed. Thank you for getting us together again in this forum with your great playing and maestro Carlevaro’s inspiration. Seeing all the comments here I trust we will soon be sharing more of our guitar inspiration….

David Krupka Blaise Laflamme Eric Phillips I hope the apparent change in Tonebase emphasis is due in large part to Martin being out for extended Parental leave. He is usually the person who organizes the challenges, etc....

Barney Sure and that would make sense... OTOH having a community-driven kind of challenge that can fill the gap when it's quiet would definitely help in keeping the traction and interest IMHO.

Barney David Krupka Blaise Laflamme Dale Needles Wai I'd love to have a community-driven challenge, even if it is just filling the gap until Martin's (hopeful
) return. It could be something as simple as "Share What You're Working On". I know a while back, several of us we're brainstorming suggestions for challenges. Personally, I always liked the themes with more focus, as it stretched me to work on music or skills I may not have otherwise. Blaise - If you want to start a thread in a general discussion, I'd support that.
Dale - sorry that we all seem to be hijacking your great Carlevaro post!
