Hi all, it was a lot of fun and educational to follow along with all the postings of the Brouwer's Estudios Sencillos. Unfortunately, I was not able to join in the fun. In any case, I want to share two more Microestudios by Abel Carlevaro, No. 10 & 11. For those who are not familiar with Carlevaro's set of 20 Microestudios, they compare and contrast nicely with Brouwer's.

That would have been great to have you join the Study Group for Brouwer's studies, but in any case these Carlevaro's are very interesting! I definitely have to post a few of them soon, and also get back to the preludios, time's running out too fast! 😅

great to hear you play these studies.. you’re right they are a contrast and an addition to Brouwer’s. Like you I wasn’t able to join the Brouwer study group , but I enjoyed so much reading the informative comments and hearing the different approach and interpretations of this iconic study repertoire by the participants. Thank you for this post, Dale!

These sound great, Dale, You always manage to make this difficult music sound so expressive and coherent. Great job - especially after 3 months away from your (or any) guitar. I just got back on Wednesday. I resumed practice on Thursday and, after 2 weeks away, I question whether I had ever played guitar before. It does feel my 'rebound' is getting longer and more tenuous. I also resumed exercising tenth same effect. Getting old is just not what it's cracked up to be.

Thanks all. These Microestudios are wonderful little pieces that really showcase Carlevaro's musical palette. Following the example of , I hope to complete the set of 20 by the end of the year. I also continue to work on three of Carlevaro's later Milongas and two pieces by Piazzolla, arranged by Agustin Carlevaro. Cheers!

Hi All I am writing to ask if you are all missing the Challenges as much as I am. To fill the gap in the short term, I would like to propse that for the month of October, we use the Carlevaro Composition Forum to hold a Challenge highlighting the Music of Latin America. Please respond to this post and let me know if you support this idea. If it is a go, I will post an introduction to the Challenge and post it on September 30th. Long Live the Tonebase Challenges!

Hi Dale, hope you're doing well. I do miss it quite a lot. In fact, I'd mentioned this to Martin in one of the livestreams a few weeks back. So, please go ahead. I'll try my best to participate.

I agree with you Dale and also miss the Challenges. Would a composer like Manuel Ponce fit into the Latin American criteria for your challenge? I was looking at a nice little piece by him recently.
Thanks for your initiative on this. It's much appreciated!

Thanks, and Ponce for sure! BTW, Carlevaro in his youth performed for Ponce and was a big admirer of him.

in geography lessons in ground school I was taught that Latin America starts at the famous Mexican border ( and including Caribbean islands) South America starts at the Panama Colombian border.
However, this was taught in Scandinavia/ Europe where the perspective of the world seems different these days

Absolutely, Mexican Music is definitely a fundamental component of what we call Latino American music.

Hi Dale - thank you for posting this. Yes I've definitely been missing the challenges - they've often led me to composers or pieces I haven't discovered before. Music of Latin America sounds good

great initiative. I join the others in that I also miss the challenges a lot. Music of Latin America is quite a broad topic. As for me, I don’t feel myself very at ease in this music. But the pleasure of joining all of you guitar friends in such a project is enough of an incentive to dive into the vast repertoire ….

Thank you for the invitation and the initiative. The two first weeks of October I am going to Spain (Basque, Asturias, Rioja) -guitarless - and probably gaining some weight. So time limited. Nevertheless you have inspired me to look at Misionera (Morel/Bustamente) again. But don’t know if I will throw it in.
Personally I am ambiguous about the monthly challenges because for me one month is (way) too short to learn a piece..that I really want to spend time on.I also understand why TB can’t support the monthly challenges as much. They have a business to run and develop and a lot of other customers to service and prioritize and we want TB to stay alive.
Kudo to Dale and others for private initiative for monthly challenges (and Carlevaro school) and not least also to those participating.
But I wish practice diary was more alive. There you are not limited to one months and can present what you wantLars

Thanks for your post. Have a great trip to Spain to one of my favorite regions. The cave art in that area is spectacular as is the vino. My two favorite cities are Bilbao and Ribadesalla. Hope you can follow the Challenge during your travels and maybe pop in with a piece at the end of October.

Great, Dale. Thanks for doing this. Hopefully this will lead to a more official acknowledgement by TB. I would like to use this to revive my Tres Apuntes I & II pieces by Brouwer. Hopefully, at some point I will have revived (and retained) enough pieces to actually add some new ones!

Hey Lars, I think Latin America refers to any country in the Americas that is a Romance language speaking country. so, basically any country in the Americas that is not the USA or Canada. (I guess the Quebec province in Canada could technically make claim to being Latin American since it is principally French speaking.)
Have a great time in Spain! My family and I visited Spain and Portugal for the first time a couple of years ago (well, first for me, my wife and daughter were there earlier). We definitely want to go back.
As to the challenges, I agree with your assessment - the challenges have become less attended as time went by. However, I am hoping TB would provided a dedicated forum for the challenges that could be member directed as Dale is doing (and Eric did in the past). I think it wouldn't require any official monitoring but would be easy to locate.
I also agree that 1 month is never long enough to learn a piece - certainly for me.

And what about a dedicated section for the challenge without a beginning or an end, that has no limit in time? It would be a place where we can share our work and progress on South American music and please the learning rythme for everyone?

I'm glad this is being brought up, since I've kind of missed doing them regularly. I like the idea of having some long-running threads, but I hope it's in addition to, instead of in place of, the periodic month-long challenges. I think the closed-ended ones encourage a little more participation when there's a start and end date, and they're moderated a little with the weekly posts. Or maybe it's just that I'm lazy and need a deadline. But, I expect others need more motivation too, since the practice diary that was supposed to be for sharing progress on a piece you're working on has had two posts in the last 8 months, and I expect there would be a lot more activity in the Carlevaro thread if there were a month-long Microestudio or other relevant challenge, rather than leaving it up to people to post a new topic here. Just a thought.
Also, Lars, like Jack pointed out with his Brouwer, I've never thought the challenges were only for entirely new pieces. Maybe I've got the wrong idea, but I've always thought they could also be for presenting a favorite from your repertoire, dusting off a piece you like, showing some reworked fingerings, learning or creating an etude, learning a single phrase, etc. Enjoy Spain. I've only ever been to Cadiz, but loved it. One of my favorite cities ever.

Steve, you make some excellent points. I will work with Blaise to come up with something that can serve both yours and Lars' suggestions. We will announce it by the October 1st and know that it is work in progress and will evolve as we get members' feedback.
