David Krupka Blaise Laflamme Eric Phillips I hope the apparent change in Tonebase emphasis is due in large part to Martin being out for extended Parental leave.  He is usually the person who organizes the challenges, etc....

Martin What great pictures, Martin. The first picture is of a comfortable and alert son in the arms of his adoring father. Whereas the second image is of a contentedly sleeping son with his father who looks like he wishes he could enjoy the same contented sleep. 😴 (been there done that!)

It is great to hear from you and see you with your son. Thanks very much for sharing these images. I hope you are having a wonderful time in Japan with your family (and that you get some sleep). Looking forward to having you back.

    Microestudios No.19

It's been a while since my last Microestudios upload. Today, I tried recording No. 19, but it was very difficult! There was a lot of movement and barre chords, and the tempo increased in the middle, making the whole piece very difficult to play cleanly. I tried my best, but I think this piece is beyond my skill level.
After recording No. 19, I looked at the music of No. 20. I've never learned to play percussion on guitars, so I don't think I can practice No. 20.😥

    • Wai Excellent,  Wai. I have been traveling for three months and just got back last week and saw your post. You should be very proud that you got through 19 of the 20 Microestudios, quite the accomplishment.  I thought you played #19 very well.  It made total sense to me and really showed your progress through this journey. Congrats!

Dale Needles Thank you, Dale! I wanted to try No. 20, but the percussion parts are quite challenging. Did Carlevaro write any instructions on how to play percussive effects on the guitar?

    • Wai Hi Wai, sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you.  I am not aware of any writings of Carlevaro on his percussion technique.  I would recommend listening to recording of this piece and try to follow the few instructions he gives at the bottom of the page regarding keeping the hand open and where to play the percussion.

  • Here are two more of Carlevaro's Microestudios, No. 7 & 8.  While I have played through 17 of the 20 studies over the years, I have now recorded 8 of them (No. 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, & 17) and hope to record many more by the end of the year.  Also, kudos to Wai who has recorded 19 of the set.  A very impressive accomplishment! Wai

    • Blaise Laflamme Thanks, Blaise. BTW, is there any word on any new Challenges? It seems Tonebase is going through a lot of changes and I hope they do not drop the Challenges.

    • Dale Needles I really don't know what's going on about «Challenges». It looks like Martin is trying different formats, like the collaborative study group for BWV999, and Eric Phillips was kind enough to host two Community Challenges, maybe we can host more by ourselves?

    • Blaise Laflamme I'd be good with that. I think Eric just added them under the general discussions section, so if nothing official is being set up, we should do that and I don't mind helping with that. I like the collaborative study group idea, but they are almost certainly going to focus on one of the old warhorses, and I like the exposure to new music that the challenges bring.

    • Steve Price Maybe we can ask and see with martin if we can have a section, like he did for us with Carlevaro, to host our Community-Driven Challenges, it would be less diluted... Maybe we can give it another name not to confuse with the current Challenges... Something like «Community Sprints» similar to what we do in the Programming Community when people collaborate on a specific project to enhance and add features (or anything else)?

Dale Needles Welcome back Dale and thanks for sharing these microestudios. I too would like to see the community challenges return. I also think think the study group format was very successful and hope to see more of those soon

    • Blaise Laflamme I like that a lot. But I'd probably call it something like "Community Woodshed" since my sprinting days are definitely over, lol.
